Why visit Yamanouchi?

One mountain town, three very different trips

Yamanouchi is a town in northern Nagano Prefecture, about 45 minutes by train from Nagano city, that climbs from apple orchards at 500 m to volcanic peaks above 2,300 m. In the valley are the hot spring villages of Yudanaka and Shibu; in a side gorge, the Jigokudani Monkey Park; and on the plateau above, the ski slopes and hiking trails of Shiga Kogen.

Most visitors come for a few hours to photograph the snow monkeys and leave. This guide will help you choose the right tour if that is all the time you have — and show you why a night in a wooden ryokan, a round of Shibu’s nine bathhouses and a morning on the trail before the crowds make a far better trip.

What to see

Monkeys, onsen lanes and highland ponds

The monkey park is the headline, but the bath towns and the mountains are what turn a photo stop into a trip. These are the places that matter.

A snow monkey resting at the edge of the hot spring pool in falling snow Snow monkeys & onsen towns

Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park

Wild macaques in a hot spring

The only place in the world where wild monkeys are known to bathe in a hot spring. A 1.6 km forest trail from Kanbayashi leads to a steaming pool in the Yokoyu River valley where a troop of Japanese macaques warms up through the long Nagano winter.

A narrow lane of wooden inns in Shibu Onsen lit by street lamps at night Snow monkeys & onsen towns

Shibu Onsen

Nine bathhouses and cobbled lanes

A hot spring town with some 1,300 years of history, packed into a few narrow cobbled lanes of wooden ryokan. Overnight guests borrow a key and tour nine public bathhouses in yukata and wooden sandals, stamping a towel at each for good fortune.

A quiet street of ryokan in Yudanaka Onsen Snow monkeys & onsen towns

Yudanaka Onsen

The gateway hot spring town

The end of the Nagano Electric Railway and the front door to Yamanouchi: a lived-in onsen town with a day bath beside the station, family-run ryokan, footbaths and buses to the monkeys and Shiga Kogen.

Mist over Kido Pond and white birches in Shiga Kogen Shiga Kogen & the mountains

Shiga Kogen

Olympic slopes and highland ponds

A volcanic plateau above Yamanouchi, 1,300 to 2,300 m high, inside a national park and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In winter its 18 linked ski areas form what is generally called Japan’s largest ski resort; in summer and autumn it is cool hiking country of ponds and marshes.

The summit chairlift on Mount Yokote with Shiga Kogen spread out below Shiga Kogen & the mountains

Mount Yokote & Shibu Pass

A 2,307 m summit by lift

The highest point of Shiga Kogen you can reach without hiking boots. An outdoor escalator and a chairlift carry you to a summit with views across to the Northern Alps, a mountain-top bakery and, in winter, trees cased in frost.

Good to know

Visiting Yamanouchi: your questions answered

Is Yamanouchi worth visiting?

Yes. The Jigokudani snow monkeys are unique, and Yamanouchi adds one of Japan’s most atmospheric small onsen towns and its largest ski area. It works as a day trip from Nagano or Tokyo, but it is far better with a night in a ryokan. You can compare the best tours here.

How do I get to the snow monkeys from Tokyo?

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano (about 80–100 minutes), then either the express bus to the Snow Monkey Park stop (about 45 minutes) or the Nagaden train to Yudanaka and a short bus ride. Allow around three hours each way. See our full getting here guide.

When is the best time to see the monkeys in the hot spring?

December to March, when it is cold and snowy and the monkeys bathe most. The park is open all year, but outside winter the monkeys are less likely to be in the pool. See when to visit.

How much time do I need?

Half a day covers the monkey park from Yudanaka or Shibu. One night lets you add the Shibu Onsen bath circuit; two nights give you time for Shiga Kogen or Obuse as well.

Do I need to book snow monkey tours in advance?

In winter, and especially around New Year and the Lunar New Year, guided tours and ryokan fill up, so book a week or more ahead. Most tours on GetYourGuide offer free cancellation, so there is little risk in reserving early.
