About Yamanouchi.com

An independent guide to one remarkable mountain town, written for people who want more than a photo of a monkey.

Yamanouchi.com exists because Yamanouchi deserves more than two hours between buses. It is an independent travel guide to the Jigokudani snow monkeys, the hot spring towns of Shibu and Yudanaka, Shiga Kogen and the surrounding corner of Nagano — written to be genuinely useful before you go and while you are there.

What we cover

  • How to reach Yamanouchi from Tokyo and Nagano, with realistic journey times.
  • Which tours are worth booking, ranked honestly and updated as ratings change.
  • What to see — the monkeys, the bath towns, the highlands — and how to see it without the crowds.
  • Where to sleep, so you can be in a bath when the day-trippers have gone.
  • When to come, and what each season actually looks like.

How we research

Opening arrangements, journey times and prices are checked against operators, transport companies, the town and booking platforms, and reviewed regularly. Tour ratings and review counts come directly from GetYourGuide. Where a figure moves around — admission fees, seasonal opening hours, pass prices — we give an approximate figure and say so, rather than pretending to a precision that does not exist.

Where we express an opinion, it is an opinion. We tell you when a day trip is rushed, when the monkeys may not be in the water, and when doing it yourself is the better option.

How the site is funded

We are a GetYourGuide affiliate partner and link to Trip.com for accommodation. If you book a tour or a room through a link on this site, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the only way this guide is funded — there is no advertising, no sponsored placements and no paid inclusion in any ranking. Read the full affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

Prices change, timetables change, inns change hands. If something here is out of date or wrong, please tell us — we would rather fix it than defend it. Write to us on the contact page.
