The Best Snow Monkey Tours

Sixteen tours, ranked by what they actually deliver — not by who pays us most.

We rank these on four things: how much unhurried time you get with the monkeys, the quality of the guiding, the value for money, and what real travellers say after the fact. Ratings and review counts come straight from GetYourGuide and are checked regularly.

We earn a commission if you book through the links below, at no cost to you — which is why the ranking is what it is rather than what a supplier would like it to be.

How to choose in thirty seconds

  • Staying in Shibu or Yudanaka? You do not need transport — pick a half-day guided walk, or simply go on your own at opening time.
  • Only have a day from Tokyo? Coach tour if you are on a budget, private driver if you are two or more.
  • Visiting between May and November? Manage expectations about bathing monkeys and consider the Shiga Kogen nature tour.

Good to know

Tour questions

Which snow monkey tour is the best?

For most people, the guided day trip from Nagano Station with Zenko-ji and a sake tasting: it has by far the most reviews, a 4.9 rating and a sensible pace.

Is a day trip from Tokyo too long?

It is long — typically 10 to 13 hours with six or seven of them on the road — but thousands of travellers do it every winter. If you can spare a night, staying in Yamanouchi or Nagano is much more relaxed.

How far ahead should I book?

A few days is usually enough outside peak periods. For late December to February, and for small private tours, book one to two weeks ahead.

Are prices per person or per group?

Both exist. Cards on this site say “per group” where that applies; such prices usually cover up to five or six people in one vehicle.
