North of Yudanaka, on the slopes the locals call Kita-Shiga Kogen, the Ryuoo Ropeway hauls a cabin built for 166 people — among the largest in the world — up to 1,770 m. At the top is SORA terrace, a broad wooden deck and café facing west over the Nagano basin to the Northern Alps.
The terrace is known for the unkai, the sea of clouds that forms below it when the air is right, most often around dawn, dusk and after rain. It is not guaranteed — the resort publishes a daily forecast and running tally of how often it appears. With or without clouds, the sunset is one of the best in the region.
Top things to do: Ryuoo & SORA terrace
Watch the sunset from SORA terrace
Ride up an hour before sunset, take a seat on the deck or in the glass-fronted café and stay for the afterglow. The ropeway runs later on some evenings in season; check the last descent.
Walk the summit trails
Short paths lead from the upper station through alpine flowers in summer and to further viewpoints. It is noticeably cooler than the valley.
Ski and snowboard in Kita-Shiga
Ryuoo Ski Park is the largest of the Kita-Shiga resorts, with long runs from the ropeway top and terrain parks that draw snowboarders. Neighbouring Yomase and Komaruyama are gentle, family-friendly hills.
How to get there
- From Yudanaka Station: about 20–30 minutes by shuttle bus or taxi. Shuttle timetables change with the season and may need a reservation.
- By car: around 20 minutes from the Shinshu-Nakano interchange; large car park at the base.
- From Shiga Kogen: there is no lift link. Go down to Yudanaka and back up, which takes an hour or more.
Insider tips
- SORA terrace operates in a green season and a winter season, with closures in between for maintenance. Always check dates.
- Bring a warm layer for the deck, even in summer.
- If the sea of clouds matters to you, stay nearby and be flexible about which evening or morning you go.
